Top Tech of 2021

Happy New Year! As we did last year, here’s a round up of the most viewed technologies from the Idea Catalog for 2021.

1 SPOT

Boston Dynamics. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

This was also in first place last year! 2021 has seen a lot of publicity for this legged robot. It is being tested in a wide range of sectors from herding sheep to inspecting Chernobyl. The entry in the Idea Catalog has a wide range of use cases and some fascinating videos.

2 Anymal

Anybotics. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

Another four-legged robot for inspection and a European version of Spot. It was one of the robots used by Team Cerberus in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge (they won $1million!).

3 Deep Disposal

Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

Disposing of nuclear waste for the long term is never far from the news. This entry has information on all the sites being considered across the world and so is a useful resource for those who want to be kept up-to-date of what is happening in different countries.

4 Muon Tomography

Check out the entries in the Idea Catalog. General, Lynkeos, Ideon, CEA.

Muon Tomography is an interesting technique that uses cosmic rays to see through solid objects. Software can then generate images of what is inside. The technique has potential for inspecting difficult to access areas and use cases range from inspecting pyramids to nuclear waste packages. There is a lot of interest in this technology in the nuclear industry at the moment.

5 FIRM Arm

Firma Engineering. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

A flexible arm designed for inspection and maintenance in restricted access locations. It is one of the Gamechangers projects (Sellafield’s innovation programme) and is soon to be demonstrated for active deployment.

6 Nuclear Waste Quantification Process

Orano. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

A system for sorting nuclear waste using scanners and robotic arms. One of a number of technologies being considered for the NDA ‘sort and seg’ competition.

7 Elios

Flyability. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

A collision-tolerant drone that bounces off, rather than avoids, obstacles. It is designed for industrial inspection professionals. This was another robot used by Team Cerberus in the DARPA Subterranean Challenge.

8 AMAS

Extend Robotics. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

Robotic arms that are capable of remote operation from anywhere in the world, using cloud-based teleoperation software. Teleoperation is another technology that is seeing huge interest; the ability to work remotely isn’t just for office workers.

9 NanoPix

CEA. Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

An ultra-compact gamma camera used to provide support for nuclear investigation operations. As with other imaging products, this superimposes radiation readings onto a real image in real time.

10 ISD

Check out the entry in the Idea Catalog.

In-Situ Decommissioning (ISD) is the permanent entombment of a facility that contains residual radiological and/or chemical contamination. It is an alternative approach to demolition and complete removal of the structure in certain circumstances.
