We have just added a significant new area to the Idea Catalog. The objective was to identify genuine ‘operational’ lessons learned/learning from D&D projects worldwide through a combination of literature searches, conference proceeding reviews and with one-to-one interviews with practitioners.
What are the Benefits?
Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) is a major component of cleanup missions. As a result, there is a clear need for the development and implementation of technologies and approaches which lead to faster, safer and more cost-effective decommissioning of facilities. One aspect of this need is developing new approaches and technologies (and this is the purpose of the existing technology catalogs), but another is ensuring that the lessons learned from previous D&D efforts are shared among D&D practitioners to ensure that money and time is not spent unnecessarily ‘reinventing the wheel’ or conducting activities in a manner that have previously been shown to be either ineffective or inefficient (or both). This database is intended to improve the capture and dissemination of lessons learned to improve knowledge. It collates such lessons learned in a standard format that can be filtered, sorted and searched. Information from D&D projects around the world will be added regularly and we will soon be adding the capability for users to add their own lessons learned to the database.
